Monitoring the tightness of ship hull structures

Practical material for engineers, quality services and NDT specialists

The vacuum frame helps to check the tightness of the welded joint at the stage of manufacturing a section or body block - when there is easy access to the seam and the defect can be eliminated before saturation and painting.

Briefly about the task

The hull of a large ship is formed from sections and blocks in which the outer plating, decking, bulkheads and frame members are joined by welding. In areas separating sealed volumes, it is necessary to confirm the absence of through channels before moving on to the next technological operations.

In bubble-vacuum testing, the operator creates a local vacuum over the weld joint. Air passing through the through discontinuity forms a bubble indication in the applied composition. The transparent camera window allows you to observe the seam directly during the test.

The general industry scenario and TECH NK LLC supply information are separately provided below. Official materials from the shipyard confirm the profile and nomenclature of the projects, but not the application of the framework on a specific vessel; Section numbers, control modes and acceptance results are not published.

SSK "Zvezda": frames for hull production

According to TECH NK LLC, RUNDT vacuum frames were supplied to the Zvezda Shipbuilding Complex for testing welded joints of hull structures. The stated practical scenario involves the inspection of sections of the outer hull plating during manufacture and assembly.

Open shipyard materials show the scale and diversity of production: Zvezda builds Aframax tankers, Arc7 icebreaking LNG tankers, Arctic shuttle tankers, multi-purpose supply vessels and drillships. This is industry context and not an indication of the application of a specific framework on a specific project.

The configuration of the framework, control areas, technological modes and information about the results of the work are not published. This separation allows you to show the engineering problem without revealing the customer's production data.

Where are vacuum frames used in cabinet production

Control is prescribed for connections that require tightness. The specific volume is determined by the design, technological and classification documentation.

  • butt welded joints of external cladding sheets;
  • welds of hull sections and blocks;
  • deck and bottom flooring;
  • watertight bulkheads and enclosures;
  • bottom, side and bilge areas with accessible surface;
  • local zones after repair or defect elimination.

The advantage of section stage control

Before a large block is formed, the seam is more accessible for surface preparation, frame placement, and visual observation. The discovered area can be returned for correction before applying protective coatings, installing saturation and covering it with adjacent structures.

Inspection can be performed on the shop floor, at an assembly station, or on a bench. With a distributed work area, the length of the vacuum hose, the ability to move the installation and a set of frames for flat, corner and curved connections are important.

How Case Geometry Affects Frame Selection

Flat areas of exterior sheathing and decking are checked with linear flat frames. In transition zones, the radius of curvature must be taken into account. For corner connections of bulkheads, ribs and junctions, frames of the appropriate profile are used.

  • length of the controlled area per installation;
  • longitudinal or transverse curvature of the sheet;
  • connection type - butt, corner or lap;
  • width of free surface for compaction;
  • the presence of power-ups, recruitment and other obstacles;
  • direction of relocation and required overlap of areas.

Organization of bubble-vacuum control

The surface of the seam and the tracks for compaction are cleaned to a state in which the chamber stably maintains a vacuum. An indicator is evenly applied to the connection, the frame is installed and connected to the vacuum source through the control unit.

After reaching the specified mode, the operator monitors the connection for the time specified by the instructions. A steadily developing chain of bubbles indicates a possible through channel. The location is marked, the result is recorded, and the frame is rearranged to overlap the previous zone.

What affects reliability

Weld bead unevenness, metal spatter, soil, moisture and contamination can cause seal seal failure. Loss of vacuum around the perimeter of the chamber should not be mistaken for a connection defect - first check the tightness of the frame installation itself.

Temperature, indicator composition, illumination and observation time must be consistent with the adopted technology. The vacuum frame is a tool of the method, and the decision on acceptance is made by personnel authorized to work according to the requirements of the documentation of a specific project.

Questions and Answers

Which body seams can be controlled by a vacuum frame?

Single-sided accessible butt and corner joints for which the design requires leak testing. The shape of the frame must correspond to the geometry of the site.

Is a flat frame suitable for the zygomatic area?

Only if the local curvature allows the seal to fit evenly. For pronounced curvature, a special frame made according to a radius or template is used.

Is it possible to carry out inspection after painting?

This depends on the technology and the requirements of the project, but it is more convenient for production to control the prepared metal before applying a coating that may hide the channel or impair the fit.

How to choose the frame length?

Consider the available straight area, curvature, frame weight, grip comfort and required performance. A longer camera does not always give faster control.
